FIRST THURSDAYS
EVENINGS OF JAZZ AT MJ'S COFFEEHOUSE
ANDY ROBERTS AND GUESTS ...an evening of
jazz, Thursday, April 3rd at 9:00pm. This is
another "1st Thursday of the month"
venture for MJ's in collaboration with area pianist Andy
Roberts. Roberts plays host along with some of the most
talented jazz musicians on the East Coast. Andy Roberts
and Guests has become one of the regions most popular jazz
series, and one of the most successful presentations at MJ's
Coffeehouse
Featured artists include:
Vocalist CATHY CHEMI may be best known for her association
with big
band leader Harry James in the late 60's early 70's with whom
she toured the U.S. and Europe. She is a frequent guest at the
Central Pa. Friends of jazz Festival and the Harrisburg
Symphony as well as guest appearances on WITF's "My
Favorite Things" and "Desert Island Discs"
programs. Chemi spent time in Las Vegas sharing the
stage with Red Buttons and Earl "Fatha" Hines. She
also recorded demos with Frank Loesser of Guys and Dolls fame
and Meridith Wilson (Music Man). Chemi's discography
includes a live album with the Harry James Orchestra recorded
at the Hollywood Palladium and the
Royal Festival Hall (London) and a recent reissue with Harry
James on CD
Saxophonist/flutist TOM STROHMAN resides in Lebanon Pa.
He may be
best known for his work as CO - leader of the jazz quartet
Third Stream. with whom he recorded several albums and played
across the east coast. Strohman has also performed with
the likes of Buddy DeFranco, Johnny Coles, Al Martino, Sonny
& Cher, and has recorded with rock greats Johnny Winter
and Dan Hartman. With a masters degree in Education, Strohman
is currently director of the jazz department at Lebanon Valley
College and has produced and directed clinics on jazz
improvisation and jazz history.
A resident of Hershey, Bassist JIM MILLER, also CO-leader of
the jazz
quartet Third Stream, is a Bass instructor at Lebanon Valley
College. Miller was voted "Bassist of the year"
three consecutive years by T.V. Host magazine. He has
performed with many great artists such as Herb Ellis, Slide
Hampton, Jimmy Heath, & John Blake to name a few. Miller
has also produced and taught clinics on " jazz
improvisation" and "Bass Master Classes".
Talented drummer Sam Banks of Harrisburg has wowed audiences
for
years with his unique style and has worked with all the
musical jazz greats including the legendary Ella
Fitzgerald. MJ's Coffeehouse is proud to present this
most distinguished musician for a sixth consecutive year.
Pianist/composer Andrew Roberts of Mt. Gretna Pa. is a
graduate of
Berklee College of Music in Boston Mass.. As a freelance
pianist, Roberts plays frequently around Central Pa.,
Philadelphia, and Atlantic City. He has backed up such jazz
artists Lou Soloff, Tom Harrel, Jim Pugh, and Patti Austin. He
toured Japan with "The Three Degrees" as
keyboardist/arranger. He served as music
director/pianist for Muhlenberg College (Allentown Pa.)
and the Allenberry Playhouse (Boiling Springs Pa.) and has
been music director/pianist for the Timbers Dinner Theater
since 1985. Roberts is
music leader for Soul. Com a contemporary worship service at
Good
Shepherd Church (Lebanon). He is also involved with
"Music in the Schools" giving concerts and
clinics to area schools. He has co-lead numerous groups
featuring original music and arrangements. Most notably
"New World Parade" and more recently the "Four
Piece Quartet." Both projects
have released recordings.
MJ's offers a light sandwich and snack menu along with a
relaxing atmosphere perfect for live music. Also, the
coffeehouse staff invites patrons to bring their favorite wine
or champagne to this event, providing of course, that they are
21 years or older. MJ's is adjacent
to the Allen Theatre along Rt. 422 (Exit 85A-934 S off
Rt. 81) in Annville, PA. Admission:

MATT THE MED STUDENT: Fourth year med student at Penn
State College of Medicine. Come see the hilarious comedy
of Central PA's brand new improv group Ron Popeil's Traveling
Bandwagon. The cast features five
students of Hershey's Penn State College Of Medicine who,
through the
miracle of modern science, have decided to combine comedy with
spontaneity to produce this dazzling improvisational tour de
force.
As an added bonus, members of Washington's respected DC Improv
will
be featured guest performers. Audience participation is
encouraged.
